Minister Mary Hanafin TD officially opens New Autistic Unit in Liscarroll National School, ‘a model of inclusion’—Moynihan

June 10th, 2010

Michael Moynihan TD has warmly welcomed the official opening today of the new A.S.D. Unit at Liscarroll National School by Mary Hanafin TD Minister for Tourism, Culture and Sport, previously our Minister for Education and Science.
Developed under the auspices of St. Joseph’s Foundation, Charleville, this pilot project has broken new ground in more ways than one, with its innovative design that integrates within Liscarroll National School a purpose-built unit for pupils who suffer mild to moderate Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

The official opening was a fitting celebration of this exceptional project, beginning with Mass celebrated by Archbishop Dermot Clifford, through the unveiling of a dedicatory plaque by Minister Hanafin TD to moving performances by Liscarroll National School pupils.

The new state of the art facility, which will feature up-to-the-minute best practices in teaching and supporting students with ASD, is truly something to be proud of, for Liscarroll National School, St. Joseph’s Foundation, the Department of Education and all those who have worked so hard to establish this mighty resource here in North Cork.

The new Unit will provide its pupils the specialised instruction they need in superlative surroundings especially designed for their needs, and Liscarroll National School is dedicated, not only to fully supporting the specialised work of the Unit, but also to integrating the students of the Unit into the wider school with due care and attention to the needs of all concerned.

This model of inclusion combines the advantages of mainstreaming with the strengths of specialised educational approaches for students with highly individual requirements. Specialised instruction will include Applied Behavioural Analysis strategies, T.E.A.C.C.H. structured teaching, occupational therapy, bilateral integration, visual integration and physical education, including swimming.

Liscarroll National School ASD Unit will provide immeasurable benefits to students and their families who face the massive day-to-day challenges of ASD and help them capitalise on their unique strengths, and I am delighted to have played a key role in delivering the Government funding to enable the development of this Unit.
