Michael Moynihan TD has welcomed yesterday’s announcement by Tánaiste Mary Coughlan TD, Minister for Education and Science, that applications are now being accepted for the 2011Summer Works Scheme.
Even in difficult budgetary circumstances, we must look after our schools and the Government continues to make this a priority.
This vital scheme provides funding for primary and secondary schools to get summer works done on projects such as gas, electrical and mechanical works, roof replacements and repairs, windows replacement, toilet upgrades, environmental upgrades, structural improvements and access works.
The closing date for receipt of applications is 21st January so I urge North Cork schools in need of these works to move quickly to ensure their application will be completed in time. The Application Form and Circular Letter can be accessed on the Department of Education and Skills website www.education.ie.
Any North Cork schools with queries about the Scheme can ring the free phone Support Line on 1 800 200 955 between 10 am and 1 pm daily through the 21st January.
Our schools are the foundation of our economy and our society, and these grants embody the Government’s dedication to maintaining and upgrading our schools to facilitate teachers and staff members in all they do to provide our students with the high quality education for which Ireland is known.
These grants allow schools to make necessary upgrades and they will also provide employment for the local companies that are hired to complete any approved works, an additional benefit for North Cork communities.
Because the works are completed during the summer holidays, there is no disruption but students, teachers and staff members return to improved facilities.
To date this scheme has been very successful and numerous North Cork schools have benefited from it, and I will continue to work closely with An Tánaiste Mary Coughlan TD to secure all possible funding for schools in Cork North West.’
